How to Make a Pixel Art Avatar

Pixel art avatars work well for social profiles, game character sketches, sticker drafts, and forum icons. The key is keeping the subject readable at small sizes.

Choose a clear subject

Use a front-facing or slightly angled image with a simple background. Complex backgrounds use too many pixels and make the face or hair harder to read.

Adjust padding before exporting

If the subject is too small, the avatar feels empty. If it is too large, important edges may be cropped. Preview 64x64 and 32x32 before downloading.

Use a black outer outline

A clean black outline helps small avatars stay readable, especially around hair, ears, hats, and other silhouette details.

Pick the right export size

128x128 keeps more detail, 64x64 is useful for profile images, and 32x32 is better for compact icons and badges.
